Cheap sleep: Hotels in Stockholm on a budget

Let’s face it, Stockholm is not known for having the cheapest hotels around but despite its reputation there are any number of great options that offer clean, affordable stays in a variety of price ranges that will also keep you close to your favourite tourist destinations. Here are a couple of cheap hotels and hostels worth checking out.

Långholmen Vandrarhem

Fancy a night or two in the cells? Try this converted Crown Prison (last prisoner left in 1975) where you’ll enjoy pretty basic living (bunks beds for all!) but also free Wi-Fi, an Internet café, a pub, restaurant, bike rental and a launderette. It’s open 24/7 and while bed linen and towels are not included in the price, you can rent them for under 100 SEK.

Where: Långholmsmuren 20
How much: 240 SEK/night

STF Youth Hostel af Chapman

Stockholm is a city surrounded by water so it makes sense that you might want to sleep on a ship. Yes, a ship. The af Chapman is one of Stockholm’s most famous landmarks, located at the island of Skeppsholmen and overlooking Old Town (Gamla Stan) and the Royal Palace. 24-hour Reception is found in a 19th-century building next to the boat, where you’ll also find further accommodation. Bed linen and towels are included and you’re so close to some of the best tourist destinations in Stockholm that you pretty much need only roll out of bed and walk for a few minutes to enjoy some of the best our beautiful city has to offer.

Where: Västra Brobänken
How much: 340 SEK/night

Crafoord Place

With views from all rooms and just a short jaunt from Stockholm’s Central Station and City Terminal (where your airport bus will arrive) this is a cosy, friendly little hotel with just 9 rooms. Free Wi-Fi and a chill out room where movies are shown make this a budget stay with style.

Where: Hälsobrunnsgatan 10
How much: 170 SEK/night

Drottning Victorias Örlogshem

Tucked away just around the corner from the glorious Kungsträdgården, the ferries, the Grand Hotel, and most importantly: pretty much everything else, this hidden gem of a hotel boasts 45 rooms, each equipped with TV and free Wi-Fi – and bucketloads of charm. Did we mention that breakfast is also included, and that you can choose from single, double, triple or four bed rooms? Or that this is a former sailor’s home that retains many artifacts? Check it out for yourself.

Where: Teatergatan 3
How much: Varies, but inexpensive

Hotel Bakfickan

Simple, clean, and just a few minutes walk from Stockholm’s Central Station, this hotel doesn’t come with many bells and whistles but its fantastic location more than makes up for that. Free Wi-Fi, an excellent breakfast, and excellent staff add up to an excellent choice for those on a budget.

Where: Rådmansgatan 69
How much: Prices/night start at around 1000 SEK

These are some of the best cheap hotels in Stockholm if you are looking for a bargain. We wish you a great time in the city!
