Sitting high up above the city in a lush, candle-lit environment is not a bad way to wine and dine your partner. Erik Lallerstedt is one of Sweden’s most famous chefs and when your plate is finally set before you you’ll understand why. Lallerstedt is known for being true to Swedish traditions while still being a bit adventurous, with fish taking pride of place on the menu. The wine list is also excellent.

The rich red fabrics draping the walls set the tone for a playful Moulin Rouge that envelopes you in luxurious ambience. The spot in Stockholm’s Old Town where Le Rouge stands has been a place of gastronomy in many forms since the 1700s, and today that tradition continues with a menu that is decidedly Continental, with an emphasis on meat and fish.

Sometimes called the ‘Nobel Restaurant’ (this is where the annual Nobel Prize dinner is held) Stadshuskällaren is both intimate and historical, and Chef Magnus Santesson serves up dishes inspired by the wildlife of Sweden, with a strong respect for Swedish tradition. The brick walls flicker with candlelight and the location (at Stockholm’s City Hall) means a romantic walk along the water is definitely on the cards.
