Vau de Ville – a culinary experience and festive environment in the heart of Stockholm
White tablecloths and bistro furniture. Green tiles, a brass colored roof and a bar made of marble. It’s hard to believe that restaurant Vau de Ville’s fancy premises used to be a kiosk.
When Vau de Ville started the restaurant in 2012, the owners took over what was formerly called Palmhuset (The Palm House) – a kiosk of the brand Pressbyrån with a café in the middle of Norrmalmstorg square. Renovations got rid of the kiosk and turned it into a cozy bistro atmosphere.
Vaudeville is originally a French word for burlesque entertainment with music hall, acrobatics, comedy, performing animals and circus. It doesn’t really get so lively in this French bistro, but the name sounds good and looks good written on plate edges.
Upstairs you can eat a plat du jour with a glass of wine and view the square. Downstairs you’ll find the cocktail bar. Vau de Ville’s terrace has the same bistro style and is a perfect place for lunch, dinner or a glass of champagne.
Because Vau de Ville lies in a neighborhood with lots of offices, it’s also a popular place for lunch. Lunch is served Monday to Friday from 11 am to 3 pm. The menu changes every week and many international dishes find their way into it – Peruvian ceviche, Mandarin duck, Korean salmon kimche and Hawaiian poke bowl, to name a few.
On the other hand, the evening menu offers French classics such as entrecôte, seared steak tartare, clams, and oysters. Make sure to try Vau de Ville’s tuna plateau with lightly grilled tuna, salad, mango, avocado, caramelized walnuts, mint, coriander, cassava chips and grilled lemon.
For a finishing touch, you can choose between, among others, French chocolate cake, a cheese plate, crème brûlée or Trois lait, which is chocolate mousse with crushed chocolate, vanilla ice cream and dulce de leche.
Vau de Ville’s terrace is often referred to as one of the best in the city. During summer months, the kitchen moves here and adds ‘grilled’ to the menu. There’s also a lounge part on the terrace where you can enjoy a good cocktail. Since it’s heated, you can relax on the terrace as soon as early spring.
During the summer months, Vau de Ville has amusing theme nights, like Mexican evening with tacos, drinks, and music. A warm up party for Gumball 3000, the international rally with super sports cars was also held here. Most Fridays the restaurant also has a guest DJ or an after work.
