You’ll find it in the square Stortorget from the end of November until the day before Christmas Eve. And this traditional market is historic, to say the least. It’s inspired by the Middle Ages and started in 1837, making it the oldest Christmas market in Stockholm and Sweden. So here you can really feel the wings of history among the stalls.

Stortorget’s Christmas market has 41 stalls where you can find everything from lovely Christmas gifts to delicacies for the Christmas table. Santas, angels, marzipan, Christmas decorations, hand-made candles, ceramics, tea, cheeses, sausages, spices, meat, and candy are just a few examples. Of course, you can also drink warming mulled wine and munch on cotton candy, sweets, waffles, and other goodies. And if you have children with you, the fishpond is a must.

The renowned design school Beckmans holds a popular Christmas market in Stockholm every year, organized by the school’s students in design, fashion, and visual communication. The Beckmans Christmas market takes place at the lovely Rosendal garden in Djurgården, and no two years are the same as the students take over the garden’s greenhouse for a weekend. An excellent opportunity to shop for personalized and unique Christmas gifts for loved ones.

In addition to buying creative gifts that are guaranteed to be unique under the Christmas tree, you can drink mulled wine in Rosendal’s winter bar and hang out by the fire lit in the courtyard. Every year in Kungsträdgården, right in the heart of Stockholm, Sweden’s largest Christmas market takes place, featuring over 400 exhibitors. But what makes it extra special is that all the vendors are students from local schools. Through the program Ung Företagsamhet (Junior Achievement), these students get the chance to run their own businesses for a school year, creating real products to sell.

The City of Stockholm, together with Ung Företagsamhet, hosts this festive event on a Saturday at Christmas time. You’ll find an incredible variety of things to explore—handmade crafts, home decor, art, fashion, tech, jewelry, food, and drinks—basically everything you’d expect from a top-notch Christmas market. It’s a great opportunity to pick up some unique Christmas gifts for friends and family while also supporting these young entrepreneurs and their Junior Achievement company.

Taxinge Castle, located outside Nykvarn, is one of the many beautiful castles near Stockholm. Every year, it hosts Sweden’s largest Christmas fair, where over 130 of the country’s top craftsmen are represented. Browse their fine handmade products and find all the Christmas gifts you could possibly need – from your niece to your grandmother. Warm fires and hundreds of marshals create a fabulous Christmas atmosphere.

If you are looking for Christmas food and other treats, you can find endless amounts of delicacies such as herring, sausages, cheese, mustard, fish, roe, ham, roast of elk, bread, jam, chocolate pralines, marzipan, gingerbread, and beer. If you’re more into crafts, you can shop for organic children’s clothing, jewelry, rugs, tapestries, advent candlesticks, hand-made candles, lambskin, toys, and much more. Please note that there is an entrance fee of SEK 100.

If you want to have a coffee break (“fika”) during your visit, Taxinge Castle is the place to be. It’s not called the “cake castle” for nothing – they boast one of Sweden’s largest cake tables.

If you’re looking for a first-class Christmas market in a royal setting, you should head to Hovstallet’s (The Royal Stables) traditional Christmas event. You’ll find the market in the best possible location – in the middle of the city in the historic Royal Stables – and here you’re invited to a genuine Swedish Christmas tradition for three days.

Around 70 of the country’s best artisans offer their exclusive creations, so you have a great chance of finding unique Christmas gifts of all kinds. In addition, there’s a well-stocked food stall full of Christmas delicacies, and if you peek into the smithy, you’ll find a blacksmith who makes forged products of the highest quality.

During your visit to the Royal Stables Christmas market, you should also visit the king’s horses and check out the royal family’s fleet of vehicles. This includes the splendid collection of carriages used for state visits, headed by the magnificent Sjuglas State Carriage. It’s considered the finest collection in the world, so it’s not to be missed. In addition, there are also beautiful uniforms and harnesses on display.

Bondens egen marknad (the farmer’s market) is organized all year round, but at Christmas time, it shines a bit more. It’s a fantastic Christmas market in Stockholm for all food lovers who want to enhance their Christmas buffet with locally produced quality goods directly from farmers around the city. Freshly harvested, locally grown, and small-scale – it doesn’t get any better. Taste your way through the market stalls and buy vegetables, meat, fish, jams, and other goodies. There are also a lot of nice crafts for sale.

Bondens egen marknad is located in two central places in the city – Södermalm and Östermalm – and attracts a lot of visitors. And that’s no surprise. The feeling of a classic square market spiced with a wonderful Christmas atmosphere is a hard-to-beat combination. In short, it’s as close as you can get to a rural Christmas in the middle of the city.

It’s located 50 kilometers from Stockholm, but it’s definitely worth the trip because here you’ll experience one of Sweden’s oldest and most traditional Christmas markets. For four Advent Sundays, the beautiful medieval town is dressed in a charming Christmas costume that attracts thousands of visitors every year. Square shopping, food markets, Christmas music, Lucia celebrations, visits from Santa Claus – if you want to get into the spirit, few Christmas events can match Sigtuna.

Among the stalls, you’ll find a wide range of artisans and artists offering unique Christmas gifts and handmade items. Ceramics, hand-printed textiles, wood products, and jewelry are just a few examples. You can also enjoy locally produced goodies such as Christmas sweets, Lucia saffron bun, and mulled wine or buy something to eat at one of the many eateries.

Sigtuna Christmas Market is, in short, a super cozy experience for the whole family. And a little extra thought has been given to the smallest visitors. For children, there are pony rides, visits from the children’s book characters Aunt Green, Aunt Brown and Aunt Lavender, movie shows, and the opportunity to leave a wish list for Santa Claus.

Several of Stockholm’s most atmospheric Christmas markets are located outside the city, making them perfect for a winter day trip. Here, blacksmiths, jewelry makers, and other skilled craftsmen gather to offer a wonderful December experience with the city’s beautiful water as a backdrop. The quayside is decorated with spruce twigs, fires are burning, and the Christmas spirit is guaranteed as you stroll around the exhibitors.

If you’re looking for smaller Christmas markets in Stockholm, Skeppsholmsgården’s event is perfect. The intimate format makes it extra cozy, and many visitors return here year after year. As well as soaking up the atmosphere and hunting for Christmas gifts among forged products, home knitting, and handmade jewelry, you can also enjoy coffee, mulled wine, and delicious waffles for sale both indoors and outdoors.

Konstfack, Sweden’s largest art school, hosts a legendary Christmas market every year that draws hordes of visitors. The student union organizes the event, and the school’s students sell their own designs, art, and crafts. It’s the perfect opportunity to find unique and creative gifts – the diverse range of products includes paintings, sculptures, jewelry, textiles, clothing, glass, and interior design items.

If you want to take a break from Christmas shopping with something good to eat and drink, the café sells Lucia saffron buns, mulled wine, coffee, and more. Then it’s just to take another round among the exhibitors and the lovely assortment. In short, Konstfack’s Christmas market offers two days of well-designed coziness where tradition meets innovation at Telefonplan in Hägersten. Please note that it’s an entry of SEK 25.

In Steninge slottsby, located about 45 kilometers from Stockholm, you’ll find another of the really classic Christmas markets in the Stockholm area. Every year at Christmas, they open the barn Stenladan and invite you to a wonderful indoor Christmas market with a sparkling atmosphere that begins with the trees that light up the way to the entrance.

Here, everything is conveniently gathered under one roof, and you can browse among Christmas gifts, decorations, flowers, wreaths, and “fika.” The Christmas market is open daily from mid-November until the day before Christmas Eve, and all of Stenladan’s shops are Christmas-decorated and full of nice gifts. For three weekends, the shops are also complemented by artisans who stand outside Stenladan selling crafts and delicacies.

If the weather is at its best (dare we hope for a white Christmas?), a walk in the beautiful surroundings is also recommended. And if you and your company want to take the opportunity to eat a delicious traditional Christmas buffet during your visit to Stenladan, Restaurant Steninge Bruk serves all the classic Christmas dishes in front of Sweden’s largest indoor grill.

Because when you buy your Christmas presents here, you support organizations and companies that work with human rights and environmental issues. The products sold are fair trade and organic, and you’ll find everything from homemade clothes to tasty spices among the exhibitors.

Stockholm’s fairest Christmas market is organized in the middle of the city, in the ABF building on Sveavägen. So take the opportunity to not only find nice gifts that support fair trade but also support the important issues that the exhibitors are working on. Anyone who loves dragons, elves, board games, video games, fantasy, comics, cosplay, kawai, and everything else in that world will love Nördarnas julmarknad (The Nerd Christmas Market). It’s a more modern and unconventional kind of Christmas market – an event by nerds for nerds as they describe it themselves. For one weekend, Solnahallen is filled with enthusiastic exhibitors selling nerdy stuff, where you can find everything from nerd-themed Christmas cards to cosplay and LARP clothing.

Exhibitors at the Nördarnas julmarknad include nerdy shops, game designers, artists, writers, jewelry designers, and many other creators who have produced their own work. Also, individuals can sell second-hand items at the market.

Since 2012, Wasa Christmas Market has spread the Christmas spirit in Vasastan. The traditional market is held around the giant Christmas tree at Odenplan, and here you can browse about 35 tables offering traditional crafts, home-baked goods, Christmas gifts, and candles. Much of it is organic and locally produced, and Wasa Christmas Market also has two so-called environmental tables for used Christmas items.

If anyone in your group wants to deliver their wish list during the Wasa Christmas Market, you should look out for Santa Claus, who, at certain times, sits on the red throne to spread extra Christmas cheer to young and old alike.
