Do you find science and technology a bit hard? Even a little scary? Then you haven’t been to Tom Tits Experiment, Sweden’s largest science museum. Here, science is explained in a fun way so that both children and adults can have fun and learn together. You also get the opportunity to test things for real, a well-proven method to understand and keep knowledge. So head for Södertälje and get ready to explore!

Tom Tits Experiment has four floors and a large park (open May to September) and is located in central Södertälje, about 30 km from Stockholm. Since 1985, this science center has aimed to teach science and technology in a fun, inspiring, and interactive way. And since they have 175,000 visitors a year, they have succeeded.

The museum offers 10,500 square meters filled with experiments discoveries, where you can playfully learn about technology, physics, mathematics, natural geography, biology, human beings, illusions, and much more. And unlike many other museums, where you mostly look and read about things, you get to try everything yourself. It’s more analog than digital and be prepared for everything from putting your thinking cap on to twisting, jumping, and bouncing.

The four floors have different themes. The first floor focuses on physics, mechanics, power, and movement. Here you can, among other things, experiment with paints, soap bubbles, ball tracks, and engines. Floor 2 is about water and our senses. You get to try different experiments such as the mirror maze, the tunnel of darkness, and the magnet race. And the water department is obviously a dream for all children.

When you get up to the third floor, you get to experience illusions, and at the top floor, you learn about the human body and its functions. Some of the favorites here are shouting loudly, being weightless, and several experiments where you can compete against yourself or others. On the outside of the museum, there’s also a 14-meter long spiral slide that goes through all floors. Guess if that one is popular!

Other must-do activities are Makerspace, a building workshop where you can mix new and familiar materials to create something new, and the museum’s fantastic soap bubble shows, a must for all young and old soap bubble fans. Sometimes the museum also has temporary exhibitions, for example, dinosaurs have visited them.

The scientific fun continues out in the large lush park. It focuses on biodiversity and sustainability with plenty of room to discover and experiment. You can, among other things, cycle on a rope, pan for gold, and experience how earthquakes and hurricanes feel. Or why not try fast-paced riding experiments such as centrifuge and robot arm. Of course, the park also offers a lot of exciting water experiments. And if you need to take a short break, there is a nice ice cream café and many great spaces for picnics.

With four floors and a park, Tom Tits Experiment offers as many as 400 exciting experiments. No wonder it has been named both Stockholmers’ favorite museum and most child-friendly museum.

And speaking of child-friendly – of course, Tom Tits is a paradise for curious and playful children. But their parents, or why not grandparents, can have just as much fun. This is not a museum where the adults stand in a corner with a cup of coffee, but the whole family can experiment and have fun together in the interactive environment. There is no right or wrong, and most people can do most things, regardless of age.

If you get hungry, there’s a café that serves food, coffee, and pastries. And don’t miss the museum shop before you end the visit. Here you’ll find everything from toddler puzzles to educational books – and of course, a lot of experiments so that you can continue at home.

In summary: the next time the family is in the mood for a fun activity together, you should head to Södertälje. It’s a short trip from Stockholm is, and you’ll have a full day full of experiences
