Bistroteket – the place to start your day and end your evening

Marble countertops, black café chairs, and red leather couches along the matt grey walls all bathed in subdued light from recessed octagonal lamps in the ceiling – as soon as you walk through the door of Stockholm’s Bistroteket you are enveloped in a decidedly French atmosphere. And when you open the menu you realize that this is a brasserie with a twist: French-inspired, with Swedish and US influences.

At brunch, for example, the Steak Tartare is served with roasted hazelnuts, fried celeriac, pickeled white onion, and truffle. Instead of the classic Eggs Benedict you’ll have eggs baked in cream with almonds, mayonnaise, winter truffle, and brioche. The weekend brunch also features a Minute Steak served with truffle mayonnaise and fries, and Buffalo mozzarella with oregano, green tomato, roasted macadamia nuts, and mache salad.

“We want Bistroteket to reflect the food and feeling we like when we go out and eat,” says Makis Batsoulis, who is co-owner with Anders Berglund. “We want Bistroteket to feel familiar and accessible, with everyone welcome and the staff knowledgeable but relaxed.”

In order to fulfil that accessible goal, Bistroteket is open from morning to night, with 28 drop-in seats in the bistro, and 75 bookable seats in the dining room.

Bistroteket opened in May 2015; Anders was a chef who gained experience at Villa Godthem, while Makis managed Jimmy’s Steakhouse and Jimmy’s Marina for 11 years. The two men found shared premises close to Nytorget and decided to realise the restaurant concept they had long talked about. Bistroteket is meant to be a vibrant gathering place that changes up the menu regularly, varying the dishes and offering different themes and events, such as champagne and beer tasting, and ‘Moules Mondays’, where various types of mussels can be sampled. On the last Friday of each month there’s the Friday Bubble, with a DJ and reasonable prices on your bubbly.

Another theme is ‘Long Kitchen,’ which is served on Sunday’s from 16.00. Long kitchen stretches over 12 hours and is served on heaping platters with various accompaniments – perfect for getting together with your near and dear for a family-style meal. Book a table for two if you want to try an updated version of a Sunday Roast.

At Bistroteket you can also try a 3-course meal in groups of up to 30 people on weekdays and 15 on weekends. If you’re solo book in the bistro and sip a coffee or a glass of wine while you enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch or an afterwork.

“With us, you can start your day and end your evening,” says Makis. “Whatever time of day and whatever you need – we’re here to make it happen for you in the nicest way possible.”
