Vantage points for watching New Year’s Eve fireworks

Food, champagne, and great company are nice and all, but the real icing on the New Year’s Eve cake is the fireworks that light up the whole city when the clock strikes twelve. If you’re not lucky enough to have a balcony with a view, Stockholm has many excellent vantage points where you can watch the sky’s colorful spectacle from the front row seat together with other cheering celebrants.

Below are some of the very best viewpoints in town. And don’t forget to bring champagne to toast the new year in the open air!

Skansen

“Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky.” When you hear the words from Alfred Tennyson’s classic poem, you probably think of Skansen (at least in Sweden), the city’s most famous place to celebrate the New Year in Stockholm. The New Year’s celebration dates back to 1895 and is a recurring tradition for many. And since it is also broadcast live by Swedish television (SVT), you actually celebrate the New Year with the entire Sweden.

Skansen organizes Stockholm’s largest public event on New Year’s Eve. On-site at Sollidenplan, you can view the whole city while enjoying a packed program with entertainment from some of Sweden’s most famous artists. At twelve o’clock, a well-known profile reads the New Year’s poem as usual, and then it’s just to continue the party as long as you can bear it.

Djurgårdsslätten 49–51, Djurgården

Skeppsbron

On Skeppsbron in Old Town, overlooking Stockholm’s inlet, you have one of the absolute best places to see fireworks in Stockholm. The entire inner harbor in Old Town is made for watching fireworks, but you get an extra wonderful experience below the Royal Castle. Lots of people gather here, so you’re guaranteed to experience a festive midnight celebration surrounded by lots of happy people.

Strömkajen

Strömkajen in central Stockholm, near Kungsträdgården, is one of those special places to celebrate the New Year in Stockholm. With its water views towards Old Town and the Royal Castle, Strömkajen is a popular destination all year round. Still, on December 31st, the crowds are even bigger than usual when everyone wants to see New Year’s Eve’s beautiful color explosions in the sky. Get here on time to get a good spot.
Strömkajen, Norrmalm/City

City Hall

The stately and well-known City Hall, located by the water, is a fantastic place to be when you welcome the new year. It’s one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations regardless of the season, and the crowds are even larger on New Year’s Eve. And it’s no surprise – when the fireworks light up the sky over Old Town, Södermalm, and Kungsholmen, magic happens.
Hantverkargatan 1, Kungsholmen

Monteliusvägen

Monteliusvägen, the beautiful and charming 500-meter-long walking path on the heights of Södermalm, has one of Stockholm’s best year-round views with Lake Mälaren, City Hall, and Riddarholmen. But on New Year’s Eve, the view rises another notch when the fireworks light up the sky. Gather your party, pack the champagne, get to Mariatorget, and then go up to Mariaberget. The reward when you get up to Monteliusvägen is breathtaking – made for welcoming the new year.
Monteliusvägen, Södermalm

Fjällgatan

Fjällgatan is another of Södermalm’s and Stockholm’s top vantage points, and many rank this cozy Södermalm street as the best place to look out over the city. You’ll find it a short distance from Slussen above Stadsgårdsleden. The panorama views are magnificent, and you get a total overview of Stockholm’s many fireworks.
Fjällgatan, Södermalm

Skinnarviksberget

Skinnarviksberget is a big favorite in the summer, but of course, this popular spot, Stockholm’s highest natural point, also delivers a high-class viewing experience in the winter. And especially on New Year’s Eve. Many happy celebrants gather here when midnight approaches, and it’s no surprise. You’re treated to splendid views over Kungsholmen and the rest of Stockholm.
Skinnarviksparken, Södermalm

Strandvägen

The beautiful Strandvägen, with its grand historical buildings, is one of the city’s finest streets. With its excellent location by the water, this boulevard is naturally a good vantage point and gives you a first-class view of the fireworks that are light off over Stockholm as you toast 2026.

Vasastan does not offer quite as many good vantage points as other areas, but an ace up its sleeve is Vanadislunden, a large park that stretches up on a hill and offers a fantastic view of the northern parts of the city. So if you want to see the sky lit up by spectacular fireworks and celebrate the New Year in Vasastan, Vanadislunden is a given destination when midnight is getting close.
Ingemarsgatan 8, Vasastan

Västerbron

The tall bridge Västerbron, which stretches between Södermalm and Kungsholmen, is a fantastic place to celebrate the new year if you want an amazing view as the backdrop to your New Year’s toast.
