Last Thursday, the unexpected happened – my husband, and I made a journey into history, back to the 1920s, the days of Prohibition in the United States and fashion of the Great Gatsby. We were the happy owners of two invitations to the discrete event – Prohibition Tea Party, held in the basement of the charming place called MELT Bar & Restaurant. I fell in love with it as soon as I stepped over the threshold of the front door: groovy jazz, fragrant flavour of drinks in teacups, velvet curtains and girls in evening dresses, with long pearl beads on graceful necks. At the entrance we were greeted by a lovely lady from the past, who kindly gave us a tour of this place: 0-floor – bar and a small restaurant; -1 floor (balcony) – cozy leather sofas standing along the wall with small bar tables, where you can have the best view on the stage below; -2 floor – stage and a second bar-buffet with all sorts of little cakes and amazing canapes with salmon and cheese. We lost track of time, stretching the pleasure of our lovely evening.
Approximately every 15 minutes waitresses and bartenders amazed the audience with their talents: we saw performances of jazz covers of famous pop and rock songs, dances in the burlesque style, juggling, gymnastics and more. It did not interfere us or make anyone bored: first of all, because we all have become best friends with all waitresses after 1-2 minutes talking to them, so we were interested to see them in action; and, secondly, because it wasn’t a contagious performance, but an unobtrusive addition of some spice to our evening.
It is impossible to find MELT by accident because there are no signs to this place at all – just like in the good old days of Prohibition (remember the movie “Once Upon a Time in America” or “Some Like It Hot”). But of course, it is only a part of the entourage – they are always happy to see new visitors, tourists and other guests of the Swedish capital. For convenience, at the end of the article, I attach a map, so you surely don’t miss MELT.
Every evening 20-22 MELT has a unique program: Monday – BURLESQUE BINGO; Wednesday – CHAMPAGNE NIGHT; Thursday – OPENSTAGE; Friday/Saturday – JAZZ – BURLESQUE & MORE. Admission is free, food and drinks from the menu.
Prohibition Tea Party, which we attended, remains the same every day 17-19. Entrance fee – 99 SEK per person (drinks and snacks included).
IMPORTANT: Before visiting be sure to book a table! The restaurant is small enough, and the number of places is limited.
